Come see the Tall ships in Chestertown, Maryland.
Now in its Eighteenth year, Sultana’s Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival has evolved into one of the largest annual Tall Ship gatherings on the East Coast. Visitors who come to the festival can expect to see a waterfront packed with ships, schooners, and wooden boats; performances by world-class musicians; lectures by nationally recognized authors and filmmakers; plenty of opportunities to go sailing as part of a fleet of “Tall Ships”; and the chance to spend the weekend in Chestertown – one of America’s best preserved historic seaports.
NOTE - if you want to tour the (docked) Tall Ships for FREE, be there before 9:00 am because the only free access is from 9 am and 10 am. At other times during the day you can can take a 2.5 hour sale by buying tickets well ahead of time, as they sell out fast (details via the link below).
Tall Ship sail times are from 10:30 - 1:00 pm, and from 2:30 - 5:00 pm.
Between 12:30 and 1:00 pm, the Tall Ships are returning from their morning sail, a great opportunity to see them gathered underway.
Check out the Log Canoe "Silver Heel" - one of approximately 20-25 surviving traditional Chesapeake Bay log sailing canoes.
And the gathering of Tall Ships is also a gathering of Bluegrass musicians!
See Sultana Downrigging Festival schedules of access to Tall ships, sailing opportunities, entertainment, and exhibits here.
